Troopers received an emergency call at approximately 11:09 p.m. on Friday, June 11 from a driver reporting a road-rage incident involving a driver with a gun on I-95 near exit 34 in Milford.
According to police, they located the driver’s blue Hyundai driving southbound on I-95 past exit 24, at which point a traffic stop was conducted in the I-95 Fairfield Rest Area.
During the subsequent stop, troopers found that the driver, Warner Robins, Georgia resident Dariel Michael Phillip Pope had a loaded Ruger .22 caliber magazine in his right pocket.
Further investigation found that Pope had a Ruger 22 Charger pistol in the back of his vehicle with one round in the chamber and a 25-round dual magazine containing 23 and 16 rounds.
The weapons and magazines were seized during the stop.
Pope, 23, was charged with:
- Possession of large-capacity magazines;
- Weapons in a vehicle;
- Risk of injury to a minor;
- Reckless endangerment;
- Breach of peace;
- Criminal negligence of storage of a firearm to a minor.
Pope is being held in lieu of a $50,000 bond and detained at the Bridgeport Correctional Center. His next court appearance was scheduled for Monday, June 14.
